Thanks to Fair Trade, the former vineyard workers of Stellar Organics winery in South Africa—a country that continues to struggle with the legacy of the Apartheid era—are now owner-operators of a thriving international business. The farm workers of Stellar now own a more than 40% share in their vineyards, and a 26% share in the winery. The Stellar Fair Trade Workers’ Trust has now planted a worker-owned grape farm, proceeds from which support a local primary school. They now hope to use Fair Trade premiums from the U.S. market to purchase a bus that will give farmworkers in their isolated rural region better access to local services and facilities.
